L’histoire se déroule dans une école de médecine et se centre sur un groupe d’étudiants en médecine ambitieux qui sont voués à la mort… et vivent pour en parler. Amenés dans une expérience arrogante et audacieuse, les cinq membres de l’équipe repoussent les limites de la vie et frôlent la mort. Nelson Wright (Kiefer Sutherland), le manipulateur en quête de gloire qui est à l’origine du projet, a recruté Rachel Mannus (Julia Roberts), une femme débrouillarde et experte dans le domaine de la mort; David Labraccio (Kevin Bacon), un étudiant en médecine idéaliste; Joe Hurley (William Baldwin); le coureur de jupon et enfin le brillant scientifique égocentrique Randy Steckle (Oliver Platt), pour l’accompagner dans cette aventure dans un domaine qui était jusqu’à présent l’apanage de la religion et la philosophie.

Kiefer Sutherland has let slip that he will be reprising the same role he played in the original 1990 'Flatliners' film in the upcoming new movie.

Kiefer Sutherland has revealed he is to play his original character in the new 'Flatliners' film.

The 49-year-old actor has let slip that he will be reprising his role as medical student Nelson Wright from the 1990 movie in the upcoming project but he has changed his name in an effort to move on from the near-death experiments of his earlier years.

In an interview with the Metro newspaper, Kiefer said: "I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I'm the same character I was in the original 'Flatliners' but that I have changed my name and I've done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film."

His character Nelson in the original movie was the ring leader of the group of students - played by Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt - who carried out the dangerous experiments in an attempt to prove there is an afterlife, with terrifying consequences for all of them.

Kiefer is the only original cast member returning to the new film, which stars Nina Dobrev, Ellen Page and Kiersey Clemons, and he was very excited to get the call asking him to star in it.

He said: "I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn't take more than a minute to say yes."
